It's the middle of nothing to do week (*cough cough to a stack of repertoire*) and I was invited to a Late Late Show at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. Free entrance for RCM students - thumbs up to jazz students.
The Late Late Show starts at 11pm-Late on Monday to Thursday. My friends and I arrived on the dot (Thurs night) but left at 12.30pm cause the show wasn't as 'jazzy' as I was hoping it'll be. Then again, you're probs not gonna see 'Miles Davis' at 12am with a free ticket. There was a performance by a jazz trio consisting of piano, double bass and drum set. Classic combo. I personally loved the double bass player, particularly when he got out of walking bass mode and hit into some improvisational swings. Overall I think the amplifiers didn't do their job very well. The amplified piano tone quality felt a little too metallic for me. I would have preferred it's raw, edgier colours. Also, the drums were way too loud for my taste. Hussshhh percusshhh(ion)! I can hear you even if you weren't amplified.
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club came alive in 1959. It had beginnings in West End where local musicians would come together and jam away. It is now located in Soho, welcoming music fans of all ages to the famous jazz club.
I'm a proud non-alcoholic drinker. So when the drinks menu came along, I flipped to the back and ordered a Cuban Mistress - "Pressed, smashed and thrown about a bit. Passion fruit, pineapple, lemon, lime and orange flavour. Based on the Cuban Master - a popular drink from Santiago."
We also ordered two servings of fries. Because that's obviously what you have at a jazz club. Hmm. I wonder if I got things right last night.
*Sorry about the dark images. It was indeed very, very, very dark. I had trouble seeing the menu so I ended up using my Assistive Light app on my phone. Thanks Samsung.
I personally lean towards being a musical hermit whenever possible. However, when I do go out, I always try to make the most out of it! Hope you enjoy these rare outdoor/vacation dates of mine!
